Choosing a candle as a wedding gift

Check the registry first, and if you are buying off-list, treat the candle as an object for a shared home rather than a scent for one person. Two people's taste has to survive it, which argues for classic and neutral over distinctive. A refillable or keepable vessel is what gives this gift a life beyond the wax.

Before you buy

What to check first

The registry exists for a reason

Buying off-list is a choice to substitute your judgement for theirs. That can be lovely, but do it knowingly, and do not do it if the list is still unfulfilled.

Two people have to like it

A distinctive scent that one partner loves and the other cannot tolerate ends up in a cupboard. Neutral is not a lack of imagination here; it is the constraint of the occasion.

Vessel over wax

The candle will be burned within a year. A vessel worth refilling or keeping is what stays in the home, so weight the decision towards the object.

Consider timing

Couples receive a great deal at once and often move shortly after. Something small and durable is easier to absorb than something large and fragile.

Which families tend to work

These are directions, not products. Take the family into any shop and you will find something that fits.

Floral
Traditional for the occasion and broadly liked by both halves of most couples.
Rose, jasmine, and blossom over soft musk. The trap here is soapiness, so the good ones sit a floral over something drier.
Woody
The neutral option when you know one partner dislikes florals.
Cedar, teak, sandalwood. The most year-round of the families, and the easiest to live with in a room you use every day.

Questions

What people ask

Is a candle an appropriate wedding gift?
As a main gift it is on the light side for most weddings; as an addition to a registry item, or for a small wedding, it works well. The vessel is what makes it feel substantial.
Should I buy a scented or unscented candle for a wedding?
Scented is fine if you know both of them well enough to pick. If you only know one, unscented in a beautiful holder avoids imposing a fragrance on someone who was not consulted.
